Common Questions About Plaster Repairs

What causes plaster to fail?

The age of the home is definitely one key factor and changes in the humidity level inside the house is a contributing factor. Sudden failures are usually caused by vibrations from falling objects or jumping on the floor, nearby street or home construction or nearby trains can also cause plaster to crack or delaminate.

Should I repair the plaster or replace the entire wall with drywall?

If there are only a few trouble areas and the rest of the walls are in good condition then it is more cost efficient to simply repair the areas that need attention.  Sometimes Plaster walls have reached the end of their life span, this is usually indicated by the presence of various areas where the plaster is delaminating from the lathe, usually in these cases we advise to completely remove the plaster and replace it with drywall.

Can you repair plaster crown mouldings?

Absolutely!  We remove the damaged section of the original cast in place moulding and recreate the original moulding profile.  This is a labour intensive procedure and can be costly, but it is often the preferred option instead of replacing or removing the crown moulding from the entire room.

Can you repair textured plaster ceilings?

Yes we do!  We can recreate many different textures and designs: swirl, stomp, knockdown, lace, stipple, popcorn, etc.  Keep in mind that applying texture by hand is an art and while we have a lot of experience with the process we don’t have the same exact tools or the same hand that the original plasterer used.  We will create a texture similar to the old one and blend it in, but it is not guaranteed to be exactly the same.

Should I put wallpaper over plaster?

Absolutely Not!  Homeowners in the past when they started noticing some cracking in the plaster used to put wallpaper over it with the idea that the wallpaper will hold the plaster together.  While it is true that this could prolong the life of the wall, it is also true that eventually it will fail and repairing plaster walls with wallpaper is an absolute nightmare!
